Step-by-Step Descaling Guide
Follow these steps carefully for a thorough and safe descaling of your marine A/C system.
- Put on chemical-resistant gloves, safety goggles, and protective clothing
- Ensure adequate ventilation in the work area
- Turn off the marine A/C system completely and disconnect power
- Locate the raw water strainer and seacock for the A/C system
- Have fresh water available for rinsing
- Read the Accumar Descaling Solution label instructions completely
- Close the raw water seacock to stop seawater flow
- Disconnect the raw water intake hose from the strainer
- Place a bucket under the strainer to catch residual water
- Remove the strainer basket and clean any debris
- Prepare a 5-gallon bucket for the descaling solution circulation
- Fill the 5-gallon bucket with approximately 3-4 gallons of fresh water
- For standard maintenance: add 1 quart of Accumar Descaling Solution
- For heavy scale buildup: add 1/2 gallon of Accumar Descaling Solution
- Stir gently to mix — solution will begin to react on contact with scale
- The solution is biodegradable and safe for copper* when instructions are followed
- Connect a submersible pump (1/6 HP or similar) to the raw water intake
- Place the pump in the bucket with the descaling solution
- Route the A/C discharge hose back into the bucket to create a closed loop
- Turn on the pump and verify solution is circulating through the system
- Let the solution circulate for 30-60 minutes depending on scale severity
- Monitor the solution — it will change color as it dissolves scale deposits
- For severe buildup, you may need to replace the solution and repeat
- Once descaling is complete, turn off the circulation pump
- Dispose of the used solution properly — it is biodegradable
- Fill the bucket with clean fresh water
- Circulate fresh water through the system for 5-10 minutes to rinse
- Repeat the fresh water rinse if needed until water runs clear
- Reconnect the raw water intake hose to the strainer
- Replace the strainer basket and secure the strainer housing
- Open the raw water seacock
- Check all connections for leaks
- Restore power and turn on the A/C system
- Verify proper water flow and cooling performance
- You should notice improved cooling efficiency immediately
